Energy and Alliances: The Eastern Mediterranean’s Place on the Transatlantic Map

Energy security has become one of the most demanding strategic priorities for governments and businesses. Access to reliable sources, diversification of supply and the development of sustainable infrastructure influence economic competitiveness and investment decisions.

Against this backdrop, the Eastern Mediterranean is at the centre of a wider discussion about how regional cooperation and international energy companies can strengthen connections between markets.

The AmCham Annual Conference, taking place on Friday, 6 November 2026, at The Landmark Nicosia, will bring this discussion to Cyprus. Under the theme “Strategic Corridors & Alliances: Transatlantic Cooperation & Europe’s Global Connectivity,” the conference organised by the American Chamber of Commerce in Cyprus will examine the strategic relationships connecting Europe, the United States and the Eastern Mediterranean.

Energy at the Heart of the Transatlantic Dialogue

The panel “Transatlantic Energy Partnerships from the US–EU Nexus to the Middle East” will explore how transatlantic and regional cooperation can strengthen energy security, diversification and sustainability.

The discussion will feature Kyriakos Iordanou, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, Commerce and Industry; Basil Allam, Country Manager of Chevron Cyprus; and Panos Papanastasiou, Professor Emeritus at the University of Cyprus.

It will be moderated by Ioannis Georgoulas, Chairman of ACEMPI and Chairman of EcommBX Investments Ltd. Additional speakers will be announced soon.

The panel brings public policy, international industry and academic perspectives into the same conversation. Each is connected to a shared question: how can strategic priorities support viable investment and meaningful energy cooperation?

From Diversification to Investment Decisions

The search for secure and diverse energy options has increased the importance of cooperation between governments and companies. For Europe, energy resilience depends on access to supplies and infrastructure capable of responding to changing market needs. For businesses, the focus is on the stability and commercial conditions required to support large-scale investment.

The Eastern Mediterranean has the potential to contribute to this discussion. Realising that potential, however, requires coordination, appropriate infrastructure and projects that can proceed on commercially viable terms.

The conference will bring that relationship between strategy and the market into focus, examining how governments, international organisations and companies can develop partnerships with lasting value.

Cyprus’s Position

For Cyprus, energy cooperation is connected both to economic development and to the country’s wider role in the region. Strengthening connectivity and attracting international partners depend on bringing public priorities together with private-sector expertise and capital.

The discussion at the AmCham Annual Conference will consider these opportunities within the broader relationship between Europe, the United States and the Eastern Mediterranean.

The objective is to give energy ambitions practical form: partnerships that strengthen security, investments that move forward and infrastructure that responds to market needs.
