Cabinet approves €4.6 million in aid for farmers affected by drought in 2025

Cyprus’ Council of Ministers has approved emergency financial support totalling €4.6 million for farmers affected by the prolonged lack of rainfall and drought in 2025, following a proposal by the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment.

According to a statement issued by the Ministry on Wednesday, the funding will come entirely from European resources and was secured following efforts to persuade the European Commission to activate the European Union’s Agricultural Reserve.

The aim is to support the income of affected producers and safeguard the viability of their agricultural holdings.

The statement said the prolonged lack of rainfall, high temperatures and limited water supplies available for irrigation during 2025 had affected agricultural production, causing problems for various crops and honey production, as well as increasing animal feed costs.

According to the preliminary plan, the emergency support will cover producers of cereals, citrus fruits, olives and bananas, as well as beekeepers, sheep and goat farmers, and cattle farmers.
