Cyprus-Japan relations are entering a “new chapter” with his visit to Japan, Foreign Affairs Minister Constantinos Kombos said in a post on platform "X" on Monday, noting that it marks the first visit by a Cypriot Foreign Minister to the country in eight years.
Kombos described his meeting with Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi as excellent, saying it reaffirmed the two countries’ shared goal of strengthening their partnership.
According to his post, the agenda included bilateral relations, with a focus on prospects for economic ties, maritime connectivity, shipping and higher education, as well as the Free and Open Indo-Pacific (FOIP) and the next steps in EU-Japan relations.
The two sides also discussed key developments on priority interregional issues, as well as Cyprus and Japan’s shared commitment to international law.
As part of his visit to Japan, Kombos visited Waseda University, where he met with Executive Vice President Professor Shuichi Furuya and Professor Masato Shizume of the Faculty of Political Science and Economics.
“We had a good exchange of views on prospects for further cooperation between Cyprus and Japan in the field of higher education,” Kombos said in another post on "X".
