Hybrid saloon cars surged to a 52.4% market share in Cyprus during the first eight months of 2026, up from 43.6% in the same period last year, according to figures released Tuesday by the Statistical Service.
By contrast, the share of petrol-powered saloon cars within this vehicle category fell to 35.3% in January–August 2026 (from 43.2% in the corresponding 2025 period), as did the shares of diesel-powered cars (from 8.5% in 2025 to 8.0% in 2026) and electric cars (from 4.8% to 4.3%).
Moreover, according to the Statistical Service, the total number of registered vehicles increased by 11.2% in January–August 2026, reaching 38,564, compared with 34,668 in the same period in 2025.
Registrations of passenger saloon cars rose by 10.9% to 29,902, compared with 26,961 in the corresponding 2025 period. Of the total passenger saloon cars, 9,326 or 31.2% were new and 20,576 or 68.8% were used vehicles.
Rental cars, in particular, recorded a 14.2% decrease (from 4,044 to 3,468).
Bus registrations increased to 142 in January–August 2026, from 101 in the same period in 2025.
In addition, registrations of goods transport vehicles rose to 4,463 in January–August 2026, compared with 3,935 in the corresponding 2025 period, marking an increase of 13.4%.
Specifically, according to the Statistical Service, light vans increased by 12.2% to 3,535, road tractors (articulated tractor units) by 21.0% to 167, heavy lorries by 17.0% to 536, and rental goods vehicles by 20.3% to 225.
Registrations of mopeds (<50cc) fell to 103 in January–August 2026, compared with 155 in the same period in 2025.
Finally, registrations of motorcycles (>50cc) increased by 10.8% to 3,428 in January–August 2026, compared with 3,094 in the same period in 2025.

According to the Statistical Service, in August 2026 total registrations of motor vehicles reached 3,777, recording an increase of 8.9% compared with 3,468 in August 2025.
