The number of pupils enrolled in primary education in Cyprus reached 60,596 in 2024, with a ratio of 11.5 pupils per teacher, according to data published by Eurostat on Tuesday.
The pupil-teacher ratio in Cyprus was below the EU average of 13.3 pupils per teacher. At the same time, the ratio in Cyprus decreased compared with 2014, when it stood at 13.6 pupils per teacher.
In terms of the total number of primary education pupils, only Malta, with 27,537 pupils, and Luxembourg, with 43,020, recorded lower figures than Cyprus.
At EU level, 23.2 million pupils were enrolled in primary education in 2024, a decrease of 0.2%, or 35,153 pupils, compared with 2023.
Compared with 2014, however, the number of pupils in primary education in the EU increased by 2.9%, corresponding to 659,086 additional pupils, according to Eurostat.
France had the largest number of primary education pupils in 2024, at 4.1 million. It was followed by Germany with 3.3 million, Spain with 2.8 million and Italy with 2.6 million.
In 2024, there were an average of 13.3 primary education pupils per teacher in the EU, compared with 14.2 in 2014.
Eurostat notes that the pupil-teacher ratio provides information on the level of teacher resources available and can be used as an indirect indicator when analysing schooling conditions.
