The child benefit expands and will cover an additional 17,000 families, while the reform will also increase both the amount of the benefit and the applicable income thresholds, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides announced in a video message.
Specifically, President Christodoulides said that the income limit will be increased for all families. “In particular, the maximum income thresholds for families with three and four dependent children will now be set at €90,000 and €100,000, respectively, thereby also addressing the request for greater support for middle-class families. As we decided in 2025, families with five or more dependent children will have no income criteria whatsoever,” he said.
“Additionally, through our decision, long-standing distortions are being addressed, the most important of which is ensuring that support is not discontinued in cases where there is a small increase in a family’s income,” he noted.
Under the new reform, the President stressed, “the number of beneficiaries will increase by approximately 17,000 additional families, benefiting more than 23,000 children.”
At the same time, he pointed out that “the subsidy for childcare fees is also being extended to children up to 4 years and 4 months old, covering approximately 2,000 families and 2,800 children, further strengthening support for young parents and families.”
The President pointed out the announcement was being made “today, on the occasion of the start of the new school year, when attention is focused on our children and on the future of this country.”
He described the announcement as “a new, important reform concerning the expansion of the Child Benefit, substantially strengthening support for families with children.”
“With consistency and seriousness, the strong and growth-oriented performance of the economy enables us to implement targeted policies in Education, Health and the Welfare State, with a meaningful social impact and a clear improvement in citizens’ everyday lives. Our goal and objective is the continuous increase of disposable income by returning the benefits of economic growth to society,” he said, concluding that “through action, we are supporting families and the middle class, and changing our Cyprus.”
