Road freight transport within Cyprus increased by 2.3 per cent in terms of weight during the first quarter of 2026, while freight transported to and from the island rose by 9.3 per cent, according to data released on Wednesday by the Statistical Service.
Between January and March 2026, road freight transport within Cyprus reached 11,130.5 thousand tonnes, compared with 10,882.1 thousand tonnes during the corresponding period of 2025.
Meanwhile, road freight transport to and from Cyprus amounted to 11 thousand tonnes in the first quarter of 2026, up from 10.1 thousand tonnes a year earlier.
Despite the increase in freight weight, the volume of transport activity measured in tonne-kilometres declined during the period.
Domestic road freight transport totalled 259.3 million tonne-kilometres in the first quarter of 2026, compared with 270.8 million tonne-kilometres in the same period of 2025, representing a decrease of 4.2 per cent.
For freight transported to and from Cyprus, activity fell more sharply, reaching 7.8 million tonne-kilometres in January-March 2026, compared with 10.3 million tonne-kilometres in the corresponding period of 2025. This represents a decline of 24.3 per cent.
The figures indicate that while more freight was transported by weight during the first three months of 2026, the overall distance covered by road freight vehicles decreased compared with the previous year.
