Motor vehicles registrations up 13.2% in the first semester of 2026

The total registrations of motor vehicles increased by 13.2% to 29,367 in January-June 2026, from 25,954 in January-June 2025, according to data published by CySTAT.

Passenger saloon cars increased to 22,597 from 20,004 in January-June 2025, recording a rise of 13%. Of the total passenger saloon cars, 7,245 or 32.1% were new and 15,352 or 67.9% were used cars.

Rental cars in particular recorded a fall of 11.8% (from 2,820 to 2,487).

According to CyStat, the share of petrol powered passengers’ cars to the total of this category of vehicles decreased in January-June 2026 to 35.2% (from 43.6% in the corresponding period of the preceding year) and of diesel-powered cars to 8.2% in 2026 from 8.6% in 2025.

On the other hand, the share of electric cars increased to 4.9% (from 4.8%) and the share of hybrid cars rose from 43% to 51.7%.

Motor coaches and buses registered in January-June 2026 increased to 111, from 78 in the same period of 2025.

Goods conveyance vehicles increased by 14.9% to 3,510 in January-June 2026, compared to 3,055 in January-June 2025. In particular, light goods vehicles increased by 12.9% to 2,795, road tractors (units of trailers) by 18.4% to 135, heavy goods vehicles by 22.3% to 423 and rental vehicles by 31.9% to 157.

Mopeds of less than 50cc registered in January-June 2026 decreased to 77 compared to 112 in the corresponding period of the previous year. Motorcycles increased by 13.4% to 2,681 in January-June 2026, compared to 2,364 in the same period of 2025.

In June 2026, the total registrations of motor vehicles numbered 5,624, recording an increase of 13.8% compared to 4,942 in June 2025. Passenger saloon cars registered a rise of 14.8% to 4,338, from 3,780 in June 2025.
