Electricity generated from renewable energy sources accounted for approximately 36.88% of total electricity production this May in Cyprus and 23.5% in the first quarter of 2026, compared with 45.5% across the European Union, according to data published by Eurostat on Wednesday.
According to the figures for Cyprus, the share of electricity generated from renewable sources showed a steady upward trend during the first months of 2026. More specifically, it rose from 19.71% in January to 24.68% in February and 26.05% in March. The share increased further to 29.23% in April, reaching 36.88% in May.
Among the EU Member States, the highest shares of electricity generated from renewable sources during the first quarter were recorded in Denmark, where 90.0% of electricity production came from renewables, primarily wind power.
Denmark was followed by Portugal, with 82.9%, mainly generated from hydropower, and Lithuania, with 75.7%, largely driven by wind energy.
The lowest shares were recorded in Czechia (12.7%), Malta (13.0%) and Slovakia (17.2%).
