Advancing Energy Safety: HE project BROMEDIR Develops New Tools for Hydrogen and Fuel Quality Control

The Horizon Europe project BROMEDIR has successfully demonstrated two advanced technologies for monitoring hydrogen and jet fuel quality, marking a significant step toward more reliable and efficient energy systems.

The hydrogen demonstration was carried out by TU Wien, bringing together the research groups of Professor Bernhard Lendl and Professor Michael Harasek. By combining photothermal spectroscopy with a hydrogen separator–compressor system, the teams delivered a fully integrated and operational setup capable of monitoring hydrogen quality in real time.

The system demonstrated high sensitivity, detecting even trace levels of impurities in hydrogen. This is a critical capability, as hydrogen quality can vary during production and transport, and even small contaminants can affect performance and safety. The results confirm that advanced sensing can be directly embedded into hydrogen processing systems, enabling continuous and reliable monitoring.

In parallel, a second demonstration addressed jet fuel quality control using a compact a compact Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectrometer based on Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems (MEMS). The system was specifically developed to analyse liquid fuels under practical conditions and was successfully validated during operation. The measurements achieved performance close to established laboratory instruments, confirming the reliability of the approach.

These results show that both hydrogen quality and fuel composition can be monitored directly at the point of use, enabling early detection of impurities, faster decisions, and significantly improving safety and reliability across energy systems.

Funded under the Horizon Europe programme (Grant Agreement No. 101092697), the BROMEDIR project brings together nine partners from Austria, Belgium, Cyprus, France, Germany, and Poland. The project’s vision is to establish a new generation of miniaturized, high-performance spectroscopic platforms, tightly integrated with cloud-based intelligence, and validated in real operational environments across agriculture, energy, and industrial monitoring.
