A fresh perspective on the most overlooked seat on the plane (video)

For years, the last row of seats on an aeroplane has carried something of a stigma. Many passengers regard it as the least desirable place to sit in the economy cabin, owing to its limited recline, higher noise levels and proximity to the lavatories and galley areas.

A new design concept, called SkyNook, aims to change that perception by transforming the rear row into a more attractive and functional space.

The concept makes use of the distinctive layout at the back of the cabin, where the aircraft narrows, creating a more sheltered environment for passengers.

The new design proposes a semi-private retreat, giving passengers a greater sense of privacy than conventional economy seats through specially designed seating and integrated partition elements.

At the same time, the redesign seeks to improve ergonomics and make better use of the available space by offering features such as improved luggage storage, a more flexible seating layout and options that can accommodate a range of passenger needs.

The aim is not simply to give the area a visual upgrade, but to redefine a seat that has traditionally been one of the least popular choices among travellers, turning it into a more positive economy-class experience.

Although SkyNook remains a concept at this stage, it has sparked discussion about how even the least sought-after seats on an aircraft can be reimagined and given new value.
