Hotel occupancy in the city and district of Paphos is running about 20% below last year's levels, despite a rise in last-minute bookings, Thanos Michaelides, President of the Cyprus Hotel Association (PASYXE), has said.
In comments to CNA, Michaelides said hotels and other tourist accommodation are operating at around 70% occupancy for the peak summer months of June, July and August, compared with the more than 90% the sector would normally expect during the period.
While last-minute bookings have picked up, they have not been enough to offset the shortfall and return occupancy to typical seasonal levels, he said.
The weaker demand has prompted the sector to focus on attracting domestic tourists, offering special promotions and maintaining high service standards. Michaelides said he remained confident that these measures would help sustain interest in Cyprus hotels.
