Why airlines are investing in premium economy en masse

Airlines are increasingly turning to premium economy, transforming it from an intermediate option into a key pillar of their revenue and growth strategy.

This class is positioned between economy and business class and offers passengers greater comfort, more space, upgraded amenities and a better flight experience, without the cost of business class.

The main reason why airlines invest in this area of the cabin is an economic one. Premium economy yields significantly higher revenue per seat than economy, while at the same time not requiring the high complexity and cost of business class, making it particularly cost-effective.

At the same time, demand is being boosted by both business travellers and leisure passengers seeking a more comfortable experience over long distances, without reaching business class price levels.

Changes in travel patterns after the pandemic, with greater cost sensitivity but also an increased demand for comfort, have further strengthened the position of premium economy as a "golden mean" in the market.

At the same time, airlines are adjusting the layout of their aircraft, increasing premium economy seats and, in some cases, reducing economy or reconfiguring the distribution of cabins.

The result is a clear strategic shift towards less emphasis on the mass economy and more investment in mid- and upper-end categories, where the return per square meter is higher and more stable.
