Christodoulides' visit to India begins: Focus on IMEC and important business meetings with announcements anticipated

With strong economic, investment, and geopolitical significance, the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides’ visit to India begins today and will last until 23 May. The visit is taking place at the invitation of the country's Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, who had visited Cyprus in June 2025.

The focus of the visit is to further strengthen Cyprus-India relations, attracting investment, strengthening business cooperation, and the strategic role that Cyprus is seeking to play as India's gateway to the European market and the wider Eastern Mediterranean region.

The meeting he will have with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday in New Delhi, at a time when India is constantly strengthening its economic and geopolitical influence internationally and the European Union, is strategically investing in further developing its relations with the country.

In the broader context of the contacts, the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC) is also expected to be discussed, a project of strategic importance that is high on the European agenda and in which the Republic of Cyprus seeks to acquire a substantial role, both at the level of supply chains and as a hub for interconnecting services, investments and trade.

The visit takes on even greater significance due to the strong business dimension that accompanies it. The President is travelling to India with ministers handling critical economic and development portfolios, as well as an organised business mission, in an effort to further strengthen investment and trade ties between the two countries.

In fact, speaking on the evening of 18 May at the 18th IN Business Awards organised by IMH, the President of the Republic stated that tangible results are already being recorded from the growing interest of Indian businesses in Cyprus, noting that a number of companies have decided to invest in the country and use it as an entry point to the European market of 450 million citizens. As he said, Cyprus is now being approached as a European hub with an international perspective and stability, while he described the mission to India as an initiative with a clear political, economic and development orientation. At the same time, he stated that the aim is to open new avenues of cooperation in sectors such as technology, innovation, education, energy and tourism.

However, particular importance is attached to the contacts that will take place in Mumbai on Thursday, 21 May in India's largest business and financial centre, where Cypriot interest is mainly focused on sectors such as financial services, technology, shipping, investments, funds and digital infrastructure.

During his presence there, the President will participate in a business forum organised by Invest Cyprus, with the participation of important Indian companies and investment organisations that are considering investment activities in Cyprus or expanding their existing presence.

According to information, during the visit, important announcements are expected regarding new business partnerships and investment initiatives, an element that strengthens Nicosia's expectations for substantial and measurable results from the trip.

In recent years, moreover, the interest of Indian companies in Cyprus has increased, with Nicosia attempting to capitalise on its strategic location, its status as a member state of the European Union and its role as a regional business ancenterd investment centre.

The visit also takes place at a time when India-EU relations are entering a new phase, with both sides seeking deeper economic cooperation and strengthening trade and investment links, a development that the Republic of Cyprus seeks to strategically exploit.
