The relations between Cyprus and the United Arab Emirates "are today at the highest level in their history," states Government Spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis in a written statement following the completion of the visit by the President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides, to the UAE.
As the Spokesman notes, the visit by President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides to the United Arab Emirates and his meeting with the President of the UAE, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, took place "at a critical time for the security and stability of the broader region." During the meeting, he adds, they also discussed the next steps in bilateral cooperation, with emphasis on the Joint Action Plan between Cyprus and the UAE for the period 2026-2030.
The visit "constituted a practical expression of solidarity from the Republic of Cyprus towards the UAE for the unjustified attacks they have suffered and reaffirmed Cyprus's support for the security, stability, and sovereignty of a strategic partner."
"From the very first moment of the crisis, there has been continuous contact and coordination between the two countries," states the Spokesman, noting that the visit by the UAE Foreign Minister and his meeting with President Christodoulides in Cyprus on March 9, and the visit by the Foreign Minister of the Republic of Cyprus to the UAE on March 12 "confirmed in practice the immediacy of communication and the high level of trust that characterizes the relations between Nicosia and Abu Dhabi."
According to Letymbiotis, relations between Cyprus and the UAE have acquired "real strategic depth in recent years. They are based on sincerity, continuity, steady political coordination, and a common understanding that cooperation serves substantive and mutual interests," he states.
The Spokesman notes that during the meeting of the two leaders, they discussed the latest regional developments, the need for de-escalation, the deterrence of further ignition, and the importance of maritime security. "The Republic of Cyprus supports international initiatives that serve the protection of navigation and the safeguarding of regional security, based on the firm position that the stability of the Gulf is directly linked to Europe's security," he emphasises.
He further states that the visit gains additional significance due to the Republic of Cyprus's role as presiding over the Council of the European Union. "Cyprus has set as a key priority the deepening of the EU's cooperation with states in the broader region, leveraging its geography, relations, and European identity to function as a reliable connecting link between Europe, the Eastern Mediterranean, and the Gulf," the Spokesman adds.
He notes that the relations between Cyprus and the UAE "are today at the highest level in their history." The cooperation on the "Amaltheia" humanitarian corridor, the UAE's contribution in providing mobile desalination units to Cyprus, the signing of the Strategic Agreement, and the historic visit by the President of the UAE to Cyprus "constitute tangible evidence of the depth, dynamism, and prospects of this relationship," he adds.
The President joined the Minister of Foreign Affair, Constantinos Kombos, the Government Spokesman, Konstantinos Letymbiotis, the Deputy Minister for European Affairs, Marilena Raouna, the Director of the President’s Diplomatic Office, Doros Venezis, and other officials.
