"The future of humanity will not be determined by how long we live, but by how well we live," said the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, during the opening ceremony of the CYPRUS EMEA Healthspan Summit , setting the tone for the event and highlighting the importance of longevity as a strategic priority.
The opening of the conference took place in a context that highlighted the role of scientific innovation, international cooperation and political will in shaping a new model of health and well-being.
As The President noted, longevity is no longer a distant aspiration, but a reality that is already transforming societies, economies, health systems and intergenerational relationships, while adding that the crucial question is not whether we will live longer, but whether we will live better and whether this future will be accessible to all, underlining that "a society that prolongs life without ensuring dignity, independence and purpose has not truly progressed."
The President of the Republic stressed that longevity is not only a scientific challenge, but also a profound political issue, which requires redefining the foundations of prosperity. As he stated, the true wealth of a state is not reflected only in economic production, but in the health, dignity and opportunities it offers to its citizens.
Referring to Cyprus, he noted that these principles guide the government's strategy, aiming to improve the daily lives of citizens through a model that combines economic resilience, institutional reform, digital transformation and stable investments in health, education and social protection.
At the heart of this approach, he said, is the belief that a strong economy supports a strong health system, and a healthy society in turn supports a strong economy.
At the same time, he emphasised that investing in health is not only about indicators and systems, but about maintaining the human capacity to create, contribute and live with dignity at every stage of life.
Christodoulides also made particular reference to the importance of equality, noting that longevity without justice risks intensifying inequalities, while conversely, longevity in terms of equality can strengthen societies, economies and democracies.
In closing, the President emphasised that the foundations of health and longevity lie not only in scientific research, but also in prevention, education and the creation of strong and inclusive communities, adding that the health of citizens is inextricably linked to the health of the planet.
The CYPRUS EMEA Healthspan Summit was organised by the St. Moritz Longevity Forum in strategic partnership with the MHV Group.
