President and worker unions to discuss labour issues

President Nikos Christodoulides will meet with the trade unions next Wednesday, 25 February, at 9.30 in the morning, accepting the request for a meeting that was submitted to him, via letter, by the unions, SEK, PEO and DEOK.

In statements to CNA, the General Secretary of SEK, Andreas Matsas, said that the letter they had sent to the President of the Republic requesting a meeting included four issues for discussion, which were the further improvement of the minimum wage and its hourly rate, the extension of collective agreements based on the European directive and the strategy for the employment of workers from third countries, which "should be reorganised."

In this regard, he stated that "there are also serious complaints about the irregular granting of permits for workers from third countries."

Matsas also said that the fourth topic of discussion will be the implementation of the Ergani 2 software so that the labour market can be better regulated.

On the occasion of the meeting, according to the General Secretary of SEK, the unions will also raise the issue of pension reform at the grassroots level and the discussion that is currently underway with the Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, in the Labour Advisory Body.

In addition, he stated that they will also look into the issue of interconnecting public contracts with the condition of implementing collective agreements for employees.

"The problems recorded in the labour market, mainly in relation to the employment of workers from third countries and the procedures followed, in connection with the need to expand collective agreements, will be the dominant issues at the meeting," he added.
