PACE elects Nicholas Emiliou as judge to the ECHR in respect of Cyprus

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has elected Nicholas Emiliou as judge to the European Court of Human Rights in respect of Cyprus.

A relevant press release says that Emiliou, having obtained a majority of votes cast, is elected judge of the European Court of Human Rights for a term of office of nine years, which shall commence not later than three months after his election.

Judges are elected by PACE from a list of three candidates nominated by each State which has ratified the European Convention on Human Rights.

Emiliou was born in Famagusta in 1963. He has a Degree in Law from the School of Law, Ethiko & Kapodistriako Panepistimio, Athens, Greece, a LL.M. (European Law) from London School of Economics and Political Science and a Ph.D. (European Law) from University College London.

He has been an Advocate General at the Court of Justice of the European Union since October 2021. Among other professional activities, and in parallel with his diplomatic duties, Emiliou has acted as legal advisor to three Presidents of the Republic of Cyprus on issues of EU and public international law in the talks for the solution of the Cyprus problem.
