Current account balance of Cyprus improves in Q3 2025, CBC says

The current account balance of Cyprus recorded an improvement, with the deficit decreasing from €116.1 million in Q3 2024, to €95.0 million, in Q3 2025, the Central Bank of Cyprus has said. 

The Statistics Department of the Central Bank of Cyprus has released the provisional data for external statistics (balance of payments, international investment position and external debt) for the third quarter of 2025 (Q3 2025).

According to the preliminary balance of payments data for Q3 2025, the current account balance of Cyprus recorded an improvement, with the deficit decreasing from €116.1 million in Q3 2024, to €95.0 million, in Q3 2025.

The resulting deficit adjusted for the impact of Special Purpose Entities (SPEs), that is, classifying SPEs as non-residents, stood at €304.0 million in Q3 2025, compared with a deficit of €204.3 million in Q3 2024.

The international investment position (IIP) recorded a deterioration in Q3 2025, presenting a net liability position of €31,523.4 million, compared with a net liability position of €30,094.9 million in Q2 2025, the CBC says.

It notes that with the corresponding data being adjusted for the impact of SPEs, IIP recorded a net liability position of €13,386.8 million in Q3 2025, compared with a net liability position of €11,480.9 million, in Q2 2025.

The gross external debt increased to €234,868.8 million in Q3 2025 from €232,988.2 million in Q2 2025. The external assets in debt instruments increased to €224,957.9 million, from €223,083.6 million in Q2 2025. Consequently, the net external debt increased by €6.3 million to €9,910.9 million in Q3 2025.

Adjusted for the impact of SPEs, gross external debt reached €59,824.1 million in Q3 2025, compared to €59,044.1 million, in Q2 2025. The corresponding net external debt indicator increased to -€24,223.3 million in Q3 2025, compared with -€24.313,4 million in Q2 2025, the CBC concludes.
