The big day of the official opening ceremony of the Cyprus Presidency of the EU Council has arrived, with the eyes of Europe- and beyond- focused on the country, which, after thirteen years and six months, is assuming the Presidency of the European Union for the second time.
The opening ceremony is set to begin at 6.20pm and will be broadcast live on CyBC.
As of this morning, high-ranking officials, including the President of the European Council, António Costa, the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, and the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, are just some of the foreign leaders who will be at the opening ceremony, which will be held at the THOC premises in Nicosia.
The President of the Republic will have a series of meetings before the ceremony, including a joint meeting with António Costa, Ursula Von der Leyen and Volodymyr Zelenskyy, while he will also welcome the President of Lebanon, Joseph Aoun.
The Police are being especially vigilant while from noon onwards several roads will be closed to facilitate the movement of guests, as well as for greater security. At the same time, a decree has been issued prohibiting the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (drones) in the wider area of the THOC premises and the Filoxenia Conference Center in Aglandjia. It is clarified that the period of the ban is valid throughout the Presidency.
