Stelios Constantinou: Water skiing has been instrumental in shaping the leader I am today

From early mornings on the water to boardroom decisions, Stelios Constantinou, co-founder of Kiteserve and President of the Cyprus Waterski Federation, explains how a lifelong passion for water skiing has shaped his leadership style, outlook and sense of discipline.

Growing up by the sea, Stelios Constantinou was captivated by the sight of water skiers slicing gracefully across the surface. “Their speed, precision and competitive spirit drew me in from a young age. Water skiing is a unique and demanding sport that requires exceptional physical ability, discipline and mental resilience,” says the co-founder of the bespoke professional services firm, Kiteserve.

He first became involved in competitive water skiing during his university years, after joining the campus water ski club. Upon returning to Cyprus, Constantinou became active in the Cyprus Waterski Federation, both as an athlete and a Board member. Today, he serves as its President. “Over time, water skiing evolved from a passionate pursuit into a lifelong commitment,” he says. “It’s more than a sport to me; it’s a way of life that has shaped my discipline, focus and leadership qualities.”

Decades spent gliding over water have left an indelible mark on his leadership style. Beyond its physical demands, the sport has taught him how to remain composed and focused under pressure – particularly when competing at speeds that can exceed 100 km/h. Managing anxiety and maintaining concentration are critical and such skills are only refined through years of experience and training.

Though often viewed as an individual pursuit, water skiing has a strong team component, especially when representing one’s country on the national team. “These experiences forge deep bonds with coaches, teammates and competitors alike. As a result, collaboration, communication and trust become essential,” he says. “The sport has been instrumental in shaping the leader I am today and I’m deeply grateful for the personal growth it has afforded me.”

Water skiing has also instilled the importance of creating a safe and supportive atmosphere, both in the workplace and on the water. “My colleagues often remark on the emphasis I place on teamwork, encouragement and mutual respect,” he notes. “To me, success isn’t only about individual achievement – it’s about empowering others to realise their highest potential.”

The sport has also helped him maintain a boundary between the professional and the personal – a rare but vital form of balance. Early morning training sessions at the Polemidia Dam in Limassol, where the Federation is based, help him clear his mind before the workday begins. This mental reset has a positive knock-on effect on his decision-making and overall performance. Water skiing, he adds, has reinforced his belief in discipline and perseverance, qualities that serve him equally well in business and leadership. “The dedication of training encourages structured thinking and strategic execution,” he says. “Finding harmony between passion and career has been a rewarding journey. I always encourage others to prioritise work-life balance for long-term success.”

Now 62, Constantinou continues to compete internationally and still holds several national records. “It’s a testament to the unwavering commitment and resilience that I’ve cultivated over decades,” he notes. But for him, the greatest reward has not been the medals and the podium finishes but rather the ability to inspire and support others, especially the next generation of athletes – including his own children. “It has been very rewarding seeing all three of my children embrace the sport, allowing us to train, travel and compete together, each in our own category, thus forging a unique bond,” he says. “Watching them grow through water skiing and celebrating their successes – including my youngest son being crowned Under-14 European Champion and World No.1 ranked slalom skier in 2023 – has been the most fulfilling part of my journey.”

For Stelios Constantinou, water skiing isn’t about personal glory – it’s about passion, mentorship and leadership, qualities that go far beyond the reservoir or the sea.
