Works at Larnaca Marina to be completed in December, Minister says

Deepening works at Larnaca Marina are progressing and expected to be completed in December according to the contract term and with a budget of €900,000, Minister of Transport, Communications and Works Alexis Vafeades has said.

In statements to the press on 25 September, the Minister also said that final decisions on the future development of the marina and the port will be made after the recommendations of experts and consultations with local authorities and bodies.

He explained that the works include the removal of sand and algae from the seabed which are stacked on a vessel and transported to a sea area indicated by the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research.

The Minister noted that the works provide for a smooth entry and exit to the marina and this will essentially provide additional security to all users.

He also said that the floating platform-dock wil be repaired.

Asked about the 24-hour strike by the customs officers that took place on 25 September, Vafeades said that they were raising issues managed by the Customs Department and do not fall under the responsibility of the Ministry.

But he went on to say that Cyprus' ports must operate effectively.
