The Academy of Urbanism-England team in Cyprus to study the development of the urban centre of Nicosia

A team from the Academy of Urbanism England (AoU) is in Cyprus for a series of contacts with the Municipality of Nicosia, the state, and public and private bodies. 

According to an announcement by the Nicosia-Capital of Cyprus Initiative, the purpose of the delegation's visit is to conduct a diagnostic study for the development of the urban centre of Nicosia. 

As reported, the AoU team began work in July and the study is expected to be completed by the end of September or the beginning of October.

The mission is led by the President of the Academy, Andreas Markides, and also includes scientists Kevin Murray, Martina Juvara, Daniel Bone, Steve Kemp and Deborah Murray.

The AoU team, in addition, includes scientists Michelle Elvin, Steven Bee, and Matt Lally, who are not participating in the mission to Cyprus.

Based on the initiative's announcement, the AoU delegation will hold the following meetings:

  • Thursday, 11 September at 2.30pm with the political leadership of the Municipality and the State. 
  • Thursday, 11 September at 10.30am with the scientific community and 
  • Friday, 12 September at 9.30am with public and private entities in the sectors of tourism, investment, business and development of major projects. 

Additionally, the scientific team will have the opportunity to tour all parts of the urban centre and meet local associations and friends of Nicosia.

It is noted that the study is being carried out in collaboration with the Municipality of Nicosia and the Nicosia-Capital of Cyprus Initiative, which will be the funder of the study.
