Heatwave continues to grip Cyprus on Thursday

A heatwave continues to grip Cyprus on Thursday, 14 August while the danger of forest fires is on "red alert".

The Meteorology Department on Wednesday afternoon issued a new red warning for today valid between 11am and 5pm local time.

Temperatures are expected to reach 45 degrees Celsius inland and around 37 degrees Celsius in the higher mountainous areas. 

At the same time the Forestry Department has warned that the danger of forest fires will continue to be on "red alert".

People are urged to be particularly careful during their outings avoiding actions and activities which may cause a fire. 

If smoke or fire is detected they are asked to immediately call 1407 (Forestry Department) or 112 (Fire Service).
