Defence Ministry holds security and geo-economics seminar in Brussels

The Security and Defence Academy of the Ministry of Defence of the Republic of Cyprus organised an international seminar entitled "European Security and Geo-economics: European Perspectives between Political Responsibility and Economic Autonomy" between 27 and 30 November in Brussels.

The event was held in cooperation with the Royal Institute of International Relations EGMONT and the Austrian Defence Academy, under the auspices of the European Security and Defence College.

According to a ministry statement, the seminar was organised for the first time and aimed at analysing and discussing the interdependence between European security and geo-economics and, in particular, understanding the concept of geo-economics as a characteristic of security and defence policy.

It is added that the seminar examined ways of using economic instruments to achieve general strategic interests, particularly among major powers, and ways in which the EU can pursue a geo-economic policy while remaining true to its values.

It is added that the seminar was attended by 31 participants from 11 EU Member States (Cyprus, Austria, Bulgaria, Ireland, Czech Republic, Malta, Slovakia, Italy, Belgium, Romania, Spain and Slovakia), who were awarded certificates of attendance signed by the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Josep Borrell.
