Thrasos Tsangarides: Public and private sector collaboration is essential in shaping a future-ready maritime ecosystem

"Cyprus has always been a strategic maritime hub, with a strong shipping registry and skilled workforce. However, we must continue to modernise and promote innovation,” Thrasos Tsangarides, the CEO of UW Group proposes.

In an exclusive interview with CBN as the Limassol-headquarted international shipping representative celebrates its 25th anniversary, Tsangarides suggests that the way forward towards strengthening Cyprus’ global position involves, “Further investments in digital infrastructure, green shipping incentives, and education in maritime technologies will enhance our global standing.”

“Collaboration between the public and private sectors is also essential in shaping a future-ready maritime ecosystem,” Tsangarides underlines.

Among other things, he also talks about what was behind the decision to unify UMAR and WSR under the UW Group brand while also sharing a glimpse into the Group’s future.

Congratulations on UW Group’s 25th anniversary, which has also seen UMAR Shipping Services and WSR Services united under the UW Group brand. Can you tell us more about the thinking behind the brand change?

Thank you. This milestone was the perfect time to evolve our identity. Unifying UMAR and WSR under the UW Group brand reflects our vision for the future—one built on strength, clarity, and strategic growth. While the expertise and integrity of each company remain intact, the new structure allows us to streamline operations, enhance customer experience, and present a single, cohesive brand to the global maritime community. It’s about aligning our internal strengths with the evolving needs of the market.

What would you consider to be some of the other milestones over the past quarter of a century?

There are many proud moments. Establishing our presence beyond Cyprus and expanding into key maritime hubs like Greece, Singapore, and the UAE was a turning point. Another major milestone has been building a trusted global network of partners, particularly in China. Internally, investing in our people, adopting cutting-edge technologies, and fostering a client-first culture have also defined our journey. Each chapter has helped shape UW Group into the multinational force it is today.

Looking ahead, what is next for UW Group?

The future for UW Group is centered on innovation, sustainability, and leadership. We aim to continue expanding our global reach while deepening the value we bring to clients. Digitisation, green technologies, and strategic partnerships are key pillars of our roadmap. We're also focused on investing in talent and further enhancing our technical capabilities to stay ahead of market demands. Our goal is not just to grow, but to keep setting the standards in the maritime services sector.

More widely, what do you consider to be the main challenges to the maritime sector today? And, what are some of the ways these can be overcome?

The maritime industry faces significant challenges—from decarbonisation and regulatory compliance to geopolitical instability and supply chain disruptions. Technology is advancing rapidly, and companies must adapt to stay competitive. Overcoming these challenges requires a collaborative approach: stronger partnerships, embracing digital transformation, and continuous investment in people and sustainable practices. At UW Group, we view challenges as opportunities to lead through innovation and resilience.

What is your view of Cyprus’ maritime sector at this time? What steps do you believe can be taken to further strengthen our global position?

Cyprus has always been a strategic maritime hub, with a strong shipping registry and skilled workforce. However, we must continue to modernise and promote innovation. Further investments in digital infrastructure, green shipping incentives, and education in maritime technologies will enhance our global standing. Collaboration between the public and private sectors is also essential in shaping a future-ready maritime ecosystem.

Further to the above, what role do you anticipate UW Group will play in this?

UW Group is committed to playing an active role in the continued advancement of Cyprus’ maritime sector. As a company born in Cyprus and now operating globally, we are in a strong position to bridge local capabilities with international best practices. Through innovation, partnerships, and leadership, we aim to be a catalyst for progress—supporting Cyprus in becoming an even more influential player on the global maritime stage.

Is there anything else you would like to add?

Only to express my gratitude to our team, our clients, and our partners around the world. This 25-year journey has been a shared success, and we remain committed to the same values that brought us here—integrity, quality, and a passion for service. We look forward to the next chapter with optimism and determination to lead with excellence in the years to come.
