"Cyprus Airways is actively exploring several strategic partnerships to enhance connectivity to and from Cyprus," the airline's CEO Thanos Pascalis has revealed.
In an interview with CBN, Pascalis elaborated that these include new travel options via Dubai, Paris, and Athens, with developments anticipated to be announced before the end of the year.
He also revealed that, looking ahead, Cyprus Airways aims to further strengthen its presence in both European and Middle Eastern markets by 2026.
While commenting on the airline's recent partnership with Air India and the potential for further cooperation agreements, the CEO suggested that more could be done when it comes to state incentives for air carriers.
Among other things, Pascalis also shared his view on what could be done to further Cyprus' efforts to become a year-round tourism destination.
There have been a lot of exciting developments for Cyprus Airways recently, including the recently announced interline partnership with Air India. Can you tell us more about this partnership?
We are excited to announce our first partnership with Air India, with connections primarily focused on travel to and from Dubai. This collaboration allows us to offer seamless travel between four to five Indian cities (including Delhi and Mumbai) and Larnaka, Cyprus. In addition, passengers can book onward travel to Western European destinations such as Paris, Milan, and others from these key Indian gateways.
Are there other potential partnerships on the horizon? Are partnerships something that the airline is actively pursuing?
Cyprus Airways is actively exploring several strategic partnerships to enhance connectivity to and from Cyprus. As a result, we will soon be offering new travel options via Dubai, Paris, and Athens. We expect to announce these developments within 2025.
Cyprus Airways recently also welcomed its fourth Airbus A220-300 aircraft, a type which is described as being one of the world’s most fuel-efficient aircraft and also one that creates fewer emissions. Does this choice reflect the airline’s commitment to the environment? Are any other actions towards sustainability planned?
Cyprus Airways has chosen one of the most technologically advanced aircraft on the market today, the Airbus A220. As one of Airbus’s newest products, the A220 is the most fuel-efficient aircraft in the sky. While it required a higher investment, it delivers substantial environmental benefits. It emits significantly less CO₂ and operates with far lower noise levels than comparable aircraft. Our environmental commitment extends beyond aircraft choice: we actively recycle, optimize flight routes to reduce distance, minimize onboard weight, and have initiated a plastic reduction program.
The Cyprus Airways Group last year also entered the Aviation Training Sector with an Academy based at Larnaka Airport. Can you tell us more about this initiative and how it has been received so far?
Training is fundamental to the future of both Cyprus Airways and the aviation industry. Our training school is licensed to the highest standards, ensuring a steady supply of well-trained, professional pilots for the next decade. As the global pilot shortage intensifies, this initiative provides a clear path for young professionals. It also attracts international trainees to Cyprus, increasing the island’s visibility and contributing to the local economy.
The airline earlier this year debuted direct flights to Venice. Are there any more plans to further expand the airline’s routes?
Venice was successfully launched this year with a summer schedule. We will soon begin flights to Heraklion, Crete, an all-year-round route. Additionally, we plan to expand our services to Paris and Milan, both in frequency and duration, transitioning from seasonal to year-round operations.
Cyprus tourism is enjoying a boost. How does Cyprus Airways plan to capitalise on the increasing interest in visiting the island?
Cyprus is indeed experiencing a period of growth. Our collaboration with Hermes Airports and the Ministry of Tourism has supported this expansion. Looking ahead, we aim to further strengthen our presence in both European and Middle Eastern markets by 2026.
Does the government provide sufficient incentives to air carriers? What else could they offer? Examples from other countries?
Both the government and the airports offer incentives for launching new routes and increasing traffic volume. While these incentives are strictly regulated to ensure fair competition, the playing field is not always level. We hope to see more proactive measures in this area. As a small island in a strategically important yet geopolitically complex region, we face unique challenges, such as the recent crisis in the Middle East right on our doorstep.
Can Cyprus become a year-round tourism destination? How and what is the role of companies like Cyprus Airways towards that direction?
Cyprus must become a year-round destination. Winter offers mild weather and a wide range of activities. Achieving this goal is essential for the island’s long-term prosperity and requires coordinated effort from all stakeholders. Easing the seasonal pressure during July and August would also enhance the overall visitor experience. Our contribution lies in operating year-round routes (as mentioned above) and promoting Cyprus’s rich off-season offerings: culinary tourism, religious tourism, activity-based travel, and much more.
