Two dead in devastating Limassol and Paphos fires

A devastating wildfire that has swept through Limassol region has consumed approximately 100 square kilometers of land in its wake, alarming both residents and authorities alike, while areas of the Paphos district have also been impacted by fires.
Examinations are underway to identify two people who lost their lives.
The Police Press Office said that members of Civil Defence discovered, around 9pm on the night of 23 July, a deceased person inside a vehicle that had been completely burned on the Monagri – Alassa road. A second charred body was found inside a vehicle at the fire front, the Police said in the early hours on Thursday, 24 July.
Examinations are ongoing to identify the two bodies.
So far, the fire that has broken out in the Limassol district has burned approximately 100 square kilometers, while there are intense flare-ups that are being dealt with, the Fire Service Spokesperson, Andreas Kettis, told CNA.
Kettis noted that there are intense flare-ups, which are being dealt with, adding that there is currently no active fire front. “We have 10 aircraft, with the 11th acting as the coordination unit, which are dropping water based on evaluation. Shortly, the number of aircraft will rise to 13, with the 14th coordinating", he added.
“We have all our forces in the area. We will proceed with personnel changes,” the Fire Service Spokesperson said, adding "for the moment winds are blowing at 2-3 Beaufort, but it is predicted that they will strengthen and the situation will become even more dangerous when daylight is fully upon us."
