Agriculture Minister to participate in EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council
08:23 - 14 July 2025

Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Maria Panayiotou is in Brussels to participate in the EU Agriculture and Fisheries Council, the first under the Danish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
The Council will look at important issues related to the sustainability and resilience of the primary sector, based on the complex challenges facing European agriculture, a press release by the ministry said.
The discussion will begin with the presentation of the Work Programme of the Danish Presidency, “which focuses on making daily life easier for farmers, fishers and producers, but also on promoting the simplification of the Common Agricultural Policy and accelerating the green transition”.
The need to strengthen European self-sufficiency in proteins for food and feed through sustainable and innovative solutions will be discussed, while a discussion to review the market situation for agrifood products and commodities will also be held, “noting the growing risks from inflation, climate change, geopolitical instability and the energy crisis”.
In addition, the Agriculture Ministers will examine a proposal to support the need to introduce the use of recovered nitrogen (RENURE) as fertiliser, in the context of strengthening the circular economy and limiting the environmental footprint of production.
On the sidelines of the Council, it said, Panayiotou is to hold a bilateral meeting with the Irish Minister for Agriculture, Food, and the Marine, Martin Heydon, as part of the strategic dialogue with subsequent Presidencies of the Council of the EU with the aim of maintaining the continuity and coherence of discussions concerning the main European agricultural policies.
The Republic of Cyprus will assume for a second time the Presidency of the Council of the EU on January 1st, 2026, for a period of six months, as part of a Trio Presidency along with Poland and Denmark.
