The share of electricity generated from renewable energy sources in Cyprus rose to 20.30% in December 2025, down from 24.27% in the previous month, according to data published today by the European Statistical Office (Eurostat).
At the EU level, in 2025, 47.3% of electricity came from renewable energy sources. This represents a slight increase from 2024, when the share was 47.2%.
According to Eurostat, wind energy was the main source of renewable electricity in the EU, accounting for 37.5% of the total. Solar energy follows with 27.5%, followed by hydroelectricity with 25.9%. The remaining renewable electricity came from renewable fuels (8.5%) and geothermal and other energy sources (0.5%).
Compared to 2024, solar energy was the fastest growing source, increasing by 24.6% in 2025. In contrast, electricity production from hydroelectric power decreased by 11.8%.
Among EU countries, the highest shares of electricity from renewable sources were produced in Denmark (92.4%, mainly wind), Austria (83.1%, mainly hydro) and Portugal (82.9%, mainly hydro and wind).
In contrast, the lowest shares were recorded in Malta (16.2%), the Czech Republic (16.6%) and Slovakia (17.8%).
