Year's electricity demand peaked on Thursday this week
12:23 - 27 June 2025

The highest total peak demand for electricity so far this summer was recorded on Thursday, 26 June, according to Chara Koushiapa, Spokesperson of the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSOC).
She noted, however, that there was sufficient capacity and the system responded without issues, and no problems are expected today, as demand is projected to remain at similar levels.
Koushiapa explained that on Thursday, demand reached 1,070 MW. The total peak demand was 1,068 MW at 15:45 and 1,069 MW at 16:00, with the TSOC representative noting that this was a significantly higher value compared to previous days. She added that this demand was justified, following several very hot days this week with increased humidity.
As for Friday, 27 June, Koushiapa told CNA that based on the forecast prepared, demand is expected to be at the same level, possibly slightly higher. However, she stressed that, according to current plans, capacity is expected to be available without any issues.
When asked about the share of renewable energy (RES) in meeting these needs, she replied that during the midday hours—when demand peaks—RES penetration is quite high, exceeding 68% these days.
She also compared current conditions with the same period last year, stating that in 2024, high demand appeared earlier in June due to a heatwave, whereas June this year has been relatively milder so far.
Regarding whether there will be sufficient capacity during more extreme temperatures later this summer, she replied that according to studies and forecasts, there may be days with borderline capacity. If we have such temperatures and unexpected faults occur, in addition to regular maintenance, system shortages could arise". However, she emphasised that even in such cases, any necessary power cuts to manage the issue would last no longer than 20 minutes and would be implemented on a rotation basis.
