TSOC Director has asked CERA for in principle approval for energy storage

The Director of the Cyprus Transmission System Operator (TSOC), Stavros Stavrinos, has said TSOC has applied to the Cyprus Energy Regulatory Authority (CERA) to secure an in principle approval to develop energy storage systems, exercising the right granted to it by the law.

Speaking to CNA on 1 June, Stavrinos said that the TSOC is responding to applications from private investors “for the installation of autonomous storage facilities directly connected to the Transmission System” and that “to date, Preliminary Terms of Connection have been issued to seven applicants for facilities with a total capacity of 151 MW/410 MWh.”

He added that Preliminary Terms of Connection are expected to be issued within the next two months, for applications with a total capacity/duration of 80 MW/160 MWh.

Regarding energy storage by the TSOC, Stavrinos told CNA that the situation as it evolves in the Cyprus electricity system, due to the very high penetration of RES, in relation to the average electricity demand, "requires immediate measures for the optimal integration of energy produced by RES, the limitation of power generation cuts from RES and ensuring the response of the electricity system in case of faults.”

“The immediate development of these storage facilities by the TSOC constitutes a critical need for the effective treatment of the essential problems that exist in the operation of the Cyprus electricity system”, he concluded.
