President congratulates Merz: “A strong Germany is vital for Europe”

President Nikos Christodoulides has congratulated the new Chancellor of Germany, Friedrich Merz, saying that a strong Germany is vital for Europe.

Taking to X, he wrote: "I congratulated Friedrich Merz on officially becoming Chancellor. A strong Germany is vital for Europe. Committed to working together bilaterally and in the European Council especially ahead of Cyprus' Presidency of the Council in 2026."

Conservative leader Friedrich Merz won a parliament vote to become Germany's next chancellor this week, at the second attempt.
