Almost a third of employees in journalism and publishing abandoned industry in 2023

The number of people employed in the publishing sector in Cyprus, (including books, newspapers, magazines, periodicals and other publications as authors, journalist or other types of workers handling language) dropped by 28.4% in 2023 compared to 2022, according to data released by Eurostat.

The reduction in Cyprus was the largest among EU member states. The data does not include a breakdown of employees by subcategory for 2023.

In 2023, 868,700 people in the EU were employed as authors, journalists or linguists. The number of people employed in these professions decreased by 2.5% compared with 2022.

In 2023, Germany employed the largest number of authors, journalists or linguists (237,600 people), followed by France (92,800), Spain (74,200), Italy (72,300) and Poland (69,600).

Compared with 2022, the number of people employed in these fields grew sharply in Luxembourg (+67.5%), Latvia (+43.1%) and Lithuania (+22.9%).

The largest relative decreases were recorded in Cyprus (-28.4%), Portugal (-27.4%) and Slovenia (-23.4%).

In 2023, there were 76 328 enterprises in the books and periodicals publishing industry in the EU.

Most of these enterprises were in France (23,648), Spain (5,910), Germany (5,374), Czechia (5,349) and Italy (4,393).
