President Christodoulides and T/C leader Ersin Tatar to meet
07:45 - 05 May 2025

The second meeting between the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, and the Turkish Cypriot leader, Ersin Tatar, after the informal meeting on Cyprus in a broader format that took place in Geneva, Switzerland, on 17-18 March 2025, is due to take place on Monday, 5 May.
The meeting is scheduled to begin at 11am (local time) and will be held at the office of the United Nations Secretary-General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus, within the UN-controlled area in Nicosia.
Today’s meeting follows the initial tête-à-tête between the two leaders on 2 April. During that meeting, they agreed to establish a bi-communal Technical Committee on Youth and to begin work on a series of practical confidence-building measures. These include the demining of specific areas, joint environmental and climate change initiatives, and the restoration of cemeteries. They also agreed to continue discussions on improving the operation of crossing points and exploring the use of solar energy within the buffer zone.
The meeting takes place as the return of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy on Cyprus, María Angela Holguin Cuellar, is expected later in May.
Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third. Repeated rounds of UN-led peace talks have so far failed to yield results due to Turkish intransigence. The latest round of negotiations, in July 2017 at the Swiss resort of Crans-Montana ended inconclusively.
UN Secretary General announced that an informal meeting on Cyprus in a broader format will be held at the end of July, following the meeting in Geneva, on 17-18 March.
