Cyprus in consultation with EU on Green taxation, Spokesperson says
07:48 - 28 May 2025

Two taxes in the context of the green transition remain under consideration by the competent Ministry, with the Government in constant consultation with the European Union on both the content and the compensatory measures, Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis has said.
Letymbiotis, who was replying to journalists’ questions during a press briefing at the Presidential Palace on 27 May, noted that the final proposal will not be sent to the Council of Ministers on Wednesday, 28 May, but at its next meeting, once the necessary legal review has been completed.
“Yes, it was discussed, and it was not the first time it was discussed,” he said, referring to a regular meeting of the President with members of the Council of Ministers on Tuesday, 27 May, noting that the issue was raised in light of the consultations underway with the European Union.
The Government Spokesperson recalled that green taxation was a prerequisite for the national Recovery and Resilience Plan and stressed that the Government was “in constant consultation with the European Union, both with regard to any taxes that will be included in this plan, as well as in relation to the compensatory measures that will be taken”.
Letymbiotis reiterated that “the intention of this Government is for green taxation to be fiscally neutral”.
He recalled that the taxation concerning water “has already been implemented”, while two more taxes remain, which continue to be examined by the competent Ministry, in cooperation with other Ministries involved. The final proposal, he noted, will be put before the Council of Ministers at a forthcoming meeting.
