President welcomes Parliament vote on Patient Ombudsman

The House of Representatives has voted in favour of a bill on a Patient Ombudsman and Supervision of the General Healthcare System (GeSY).

President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides welcomed the development saying that it is the implementation of one more commitment he made to the people regarding the Health sector.

“Today’s voting of the bills on the institution of the Patient Ombudsman and on the Supervision of the General Healthcare System constitute the implementation of yet another of my election campaign commitments in the Health sector, which together with the Education sector, is at the forefront of the priorities of our administration" he noted in a written statement on Thursday, 10 April.

The President described the passing of the bill into law as a decisive step towards upgrading health services for the benefit of all patients, whose rights are institutionally protected and strengthened.

The Patient Ombudsman, he added, comes to fill a gap, meeting a long-standing demand of society and operating as an independent mechanism for supporting and defending patients’ rights.

Regarding the bill on the supervision of the General Healthcare System he said that we are laying solid foundations for transparency, accountability and more effective management, ensuring the smooth and sustainable operation of one of our most important social achievements.
