House President meets with Dutch Royals referring to a "landmark visit"

House President, Annita Demetriou, spoke of a “landmark visit” by the Dutch royal couple to Cyprus, during her meeting at the House of Representatives, with King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima of the Netherlands, who are paying a state visit to the island.

Both the House President and the royal couple agreed on the importance of bilateral of cooperation to safeguard common values and principles.

Speaking during the Tuesday, 4 March visit, Annita Demetriou underlined the importance of the first state visit of the Dutch Royals in Cyprus, saying that “it is extremely important, especially now, to strengthen our principles, to safeguard our principles, as it is important that our allies and friends cherish the same principles, to stick together, to be together and see what more we can do, in order to safeguard our democracies, our countries, our nations.”

King Willem-Alexander thanked the House President, noting that “it was a very important part of the bilateral state visit to also visit the representatives of the people of the country, the House of Representatives, where the rule of law is being created.” He added that “those are the values and principles our nation stands for, that’s what Europe stands for, what Cyprus stands for.”

The King also underlined the importance of having the opportunity to exchange views on how to cooperate even better in the future. The King and Queen signed the House visitors’ book, expressing hope that this visit "will mark a deepening and expanding of the relations between our two nations.”

A press release issued by the House of Representatives, following the Royal visit, noted that the two parties exchanged views on the prospects of broadening and strengthening collaboration between the two countries, especially in education and agriculture. Also, the King expressed his country’s readiness to assist Cyprus in countering water shortage, towards a more sustainable water resources management, it is added.

On her part, the House President expressed her appreciation for the stance of The Netherlands regarding the Cyprus issue, as well as for its contribution to the UN peacekeeping force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) and to the work of the Committee of Missing Persons in Cyprus. The two parties also spoke of the role of Cyprus as a pillar of security and stability and as a bridge for dialogue and cooperation between Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean area, its is noted.
