Drilling at Elektra wrapping up, Energy Minister says

The completion of the drilling by the Exxon Mobil-Qatar Energy at Elektra well on block 5 of Cyprus' exclusive economic zone (EEZ) has been postponed to this coming week, due to a slight delay because of geological conditions, Energy Minister George Papanastasiou has said.

Replying to a CNA question on the matter on 29 March, Papanastasiou explained that the delay is due to the fact that the drilling rig must be additionally shielded, due to pressures beyond those initially expected. He said that next week the government expects to have "some indication of the discoveries in the area".

The Minister said that the drilling is currently at "approximately 6,800 meters below the water surface and it is specified that the drilling will be completed at 7,500 meters."

He explained that the drilling is progressing "approximately 20 meters per hour and over 200 meters per day" and therefore these figures tell us that it will take another 3 to 4 days to determine if there is any discovery.
