EU to be present in informal Cyprus meeting “at technical level”

The European Union will be present in Geneva “at the technical level” for the informal meeting on Cyprus in a broader format, European Commission spokesperson Maciej Berestecki said during the midday briefing in Brussels on 17 March, responding to a question by the Cyprus News Agency.

Berestecki is the spokesperson in charge of cohesion and reforms issues.

“The Commission and the EU support the UN led process and the meeting that is taking place in Geneva today and tomorrow, and will be present in Geneva at the technical level,” the spokesperson said.

Last week, President Nikos Christodoulides said during a televised interview that the Commission had requested from the UN to be present in Geneva, mentioning that the request was for representation at Commissioner's level.

Diplomatic sources told CNA that this request was for executive Vice President Rafaelle Fitto, whose portfolio includes support to reunification efforts.
