Navigating the updated citizenship requirements in Cyprus

Cyprus has recently revised its rules for obtaining citizenship. These changes are aimed at making the process easier and more efficient, allowing for a more streamlined and fair approach.

Key criteria for applicants

To apply for Cypriot citizenship, applicants must have legally resided in Cyprus for at least seven years within the last 10 years. Additionally, there must be a continuous legal stay of 12 months immediately before applying, with allowances for short absences up to 90 days during this period.

Applicants are required to demonstrate good character, which is verified through clean Criminal Record Certificates. Proficiency in the Greek language at a minimum Level B1 is also necessary, which can be verified through written exams, a Greek-language secondary school diploma, or a Greek-taught degree. Furthermore, basic knowledge of Cyprus' social and political landscape is required, which is assessed through a government-administered written exam.

Another key aspect of the application process is the proof of suitable place of residence in Cyprus and sufficient financial means to support oneself. Applicants must show that they have adequate financial means to live sustainably in Cyprus without relying on state support. Additionally, applicants must declare their intention to reside in Cyprus, and show a commitment to integrate into Cypriot society.

Special Provisions for highly skilled professionals

Recognising the value added by highly skilled professionals, special provisions were introduced to facilitate their application process. These apply in particular to those in specific sectors such as technology, shipping, and pharmaceuticals.

Highly skilled individuals may apply for citizenship earlier than general applicants. For instance, those who have worked legally in Cyprus for at least four years (or three years in certain cases) within the last 10 years, along with a continuous legal stay of 12 months immediately before applying, may qualify. Importantly, absences of up to 90 days per year within these periods do not disrupt continuity. Also, language requirements for highly skilled workers can be less stringent, with Level A2 Greek proficiency being acceptable in some cases.

Moreover family members of highly skilled employees, including spouses and civil partners, also benefit from these provisions. They can apply simultaneously or at a later stage. Children who were underage at the time of the application will remain eligible even if they reach adulthood during the process.

For those seeking faster processing, an expedited application option is available. Under this option, applicants who pay the amount of €5,000, instead the standard application fee of €500, are guaranteed that their associated applications will be examined within eight months from submission.

Overall these updates to Cyprus’ citizenship requirements reflect the country’s commitment to attracting and retaining skilled individuals, ensuring robust and efficient integration processes With these changes the path to citizenship becomes clearer and clearer for those who meet the criteria.
