Nicosia to ask Greece’s Ports Development Authority to carry out study on Larnaca port-marina

Nicosia is to ask Greece’s Ports Development Authority, to carry out a study on the future of the Larnaca port, marina and surrounding area, Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Alexis Vafeades, has said.

He was speaking on 7 January, after a meeting at the Presidential Palace on the issue.

The Mayor of Larnaca, Andreas Vyras, expressed satisfaction in that, no possibility is excluded as regards the development either by a private investor or a state entity such as the Cyprus Ports Authority, if the study determines so.

Vafeades said after a meeting on the future of the development of the port, marina and surrounding land area in Larnaca, presided by the President of the Republic in the presence of representatives from the Larnaca district, that this study, which is expected to be completed within six months, will be presented to the authorities for a decision and that they will “immediately proceed” with the call for tenders for an investor for the implementation of what will be provided for in the study.

He also said that it was decided at the meeting that works for the deepening and renovation of the marina will continue as planned, as well as the implementation of the architectural competition for the construction of the yacht club and the landscaping that will connect the Larnaca marina with the Finikoudes beach.

He noted however, that, “the most important thing” that was decided, was to proceed with an intergovernmental assignment to the Ports Development Authority that has been established by the Hellenic Republic. The Minister said that it will be an intergovernmental agreement based on which this Authority will be tasked with a study on the future of the port, the marina and the surrounding area in Larnaca.

Vyras, on his part, said that they were “satisfied” with the results of the meeting. He also noted that they were satisfied with the fact that “we are now focusing on permanent development and a permanent solution” for the future of the port, the marina and the surrounding area as per their request.
