Cypriot project on security of water distribution systems among 134 projects to be funded by EU

A project hosted by the University of Cyprus, focusing on the security of water distribution systems, is one of 134 projects from EU member states as well as countries participating in Horizon Europe, which will receive grants totalling around €20 million.

The WaterSAFE project, titled “An Integrated Cyber-Physical Security Solution for Water Distribution Systems”, will be funded with €150,000 to support efforts to turn its scientific findings into practical solutions.

The 134 projects selected during the latest round of its 2024 Proof of Concept grant competition of the European Research Council, will be expected to use the grants to verify the practical viability of scientific concepts, explore commercial opportunities or prepare patent applications, and bridge the gap between their scientific findings and the early stages of commercialisation.

Among the winners of the 2024 competition are projects to develop efficient and autonomous navigation systems for satellites, to combat food fraud, to reallocate existing medicines to the fight against cancer and to improve treatments for many life-threatening conditions.

The 134 new grantees come from 20 different countries across Europe. The largest number of grants will go to Germany, Italy and the Netherlands (15 each), followed by Spain and the UK (14 each), Israel (12), Belgium (11), France (10), Denmark (6), Austria (5), Sweden (4), Ireland (3), Finland and Norway (2 each), Croatia, the Czech Republic, Cyprus, Poland, Portugal and Turkey (1 each).
