Building permits up y-o-y in first 8 months of 2024

Building permits during the period January – August 2024 observed an annual increase of 8.6%, while recording a drop of 59.3% in August 2024 compared to the same month a year before due to technical problems to do with the information system "Ippodamos".

According to Cystat, the number of building permits authorised during August 2024 stood at 183 compared to 450 in August 2023. The total value of these permits reached €87.4 million and the total area 66.2 thousand square metres. These building permits provide for the construction of 323 housing units.

During the period January – August 2024, 5,062 building permits were issued compared to 4,662 in the corresponding period of the previous year, recording an increase of 8.6%.

The total value of these permits increased by 16.3% and the total area by 18.0%. The number of housing units recorded an increase of 16.2%.

The Statistical Service says that the noteworthy decrease in the number of building permits issued in August 2024 is to a large extent the result of the transfer as from the 1st July 2024 of the authority of issuing building permits from the municipalities and the district administration offices to the newly founded Local Government Organisations (LGOs) and the problems encountered in the operation of the new integrated information system “Ippodamos”.
