MEP Mavrides discusses Eastern Mediterranean issues with Egyptian FM

Cypriot Member of the European Parliament Costas Mavrides (DIKO - S&D) has held a meeting with Egyptian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Badr Abdelatty, during which they discussed issues concerning the Eastern Mediterranean region as well as the deepening of relations between Egypt and the EP.

The meeting, that was held at the initiative of the Egyptian Minister, took place on the sidelines of the European Parliament plenary session in Strasbourg.

According to a press release from the MEP’s office, the Egyptian Minister conveyed to the Cypriot MEP the gratitude of the Government of Egypt and personally of President Sisi, for Mavrides’ contribution to the substantial strengthening and improvement of the EU’s relations, and in particular of the European Parliament’s relations with Egypt. It is noted that during the 2019-2024 term, the Cypriot MEP served as Chairman of the Political Committee for the Mediterranean, in which Egypt also actively participates.

Discussion focused on the main geopolitical issues concerning the Eastern Mediterranean region, including maritime jurisdiction (Exclusive Economic Zone) based on the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and the role of the EU, given that it is a contracting party to the Convention, in addition to the Member States.

Specific proposals for further deepening relations between the European Parliament and Egypt were also discussed.
