British Foreign Secretary paying official visit to Cyprus

The UK's Secretary of State for Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Affairs, David Lammy, is visiting Cyprus on Friday, 4 July and will be received by President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides.

Lammy will also have a tete-a-tete meeting with his Cypriot counterpart, Constantinos Kombos, at 2.30pm, which will be followed by expanded negotiations.

At 4.15pm, he will be received by President Nikos Christodoulides.

Lammy's visit comes as the President is getting ready to depart to New York for the informal expanded meeting on Cyprus on 16-17 July.

Cyprus has been divided since 1974, when Turkey invaded and occupied its northern third.

UN Secretary General António Guterres announced that an informal meeting on Cyprus in a broader format would be held at the end of July, following a similar meeting in Geneva, on 17-18 March.

The two sides agreed to proceed with a number of initiatives, involving the opening of crossing points, the creation of a Technical Committee on Youth and other initiatives in the buffer zone and throughout the island.
