Hellenic Caucus initiative for permanent lift on US arms embargo on Cyprus

A legislative initiative to permanently lift the arms embargo on Cyprus has been submitted to the US Congress by the leadership of the Hellenic Caucus.

The aim is to eliminate the restrictions and exclusions related to the provision on military assistance and the sale of defence equipment to the Republic of Cyprus.

The United States of America has lifted the embargo, but it must be renewed on an annual basis.

This complicates longer-term armament planning. The specific legislative initiative aimed at permanently lifting the embargo is estimated to pave the way for the acquisition of US weapons systems by Cyprus, thus further strengthening the defence ties between Washington and Nicosia.
