UK introduces new system for foreign nationals entering the country for specific categories

The UK government has announced the introduction of an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) system for citizens of other countries entering the country for holidays, short term studies, business trips of less than six months or using the Creative Work visa.

According to a statement issued by Cyprus’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Cypriot citizens travelling to the UK for the above reasons will need an ETA, for which they can apply via the digital application "UK ETA" or online from 5 March 2025 for a fee of £10. The new system will be implemented from 2 April 2025.

Once secured, the ETA can be used for multiple journeys within two years or until the holder's passport expires. It is understood that if the applicant is issued a new passport earlier, he/she will have to reapply.

It is noted that citizens travelling to the UK for the purpose of study or work will still need to obtain the relevant entry permit or special category visa as already in force and will therefore not need the ETA.
