Constantinos Ioannou: Strengthening the transatlantic relationship with the US is a clear strategic priority for the government

The role of Cyprus as a bridge between Europe, the Middle East and Africa, as well as the importance of regional cooperation in strengthening the country’s international presence, was highlighted by the Minister of Interior, Constantinos Ioannou, speaking on behalf of the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides, in the context of the AmCham Annual Conference.

In his opening remarks during the session entitled “Cyprus at the Crossroads: Advancing Transatlantic Cooperation and Regional Connectivity”, Ioannou referred to ensuring the security and prosperity of Europe, which is based on reliable interconnections and strong partnerships in energy routes, transport networks and digital infrastructure.

Representing the government, the Minister stressed that strengthening the transatlantic relationship is a clear strategic priority, anchored in democracy, the rule of law and respect for international law. As he stated, “the Cyprus-United States Strategic Dialogue provides a structured framework for advanced cooperation in security, crisis management, energy, trade, investment and education,” with a shared ambition to translate these relationships into stronger commercial ties and concrete results.

The operational role of Cyprus and the energy partnership

At the same time, Ioannou focused on the operational and stabilising role of the Republic of Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean, noting that developments in the region directly affect European security. Cyprus has demonstrated its readiness by facilitating the evacuation of civilians from conflict zones and supporting humanitarian cooperation through the Amalthea initiative.

In the energy sector, he stressed that “the involvement of American companies in the Exclusive Economic Zone of Cyprus illustrates the importance of our energy partnership”, while noting that infrastructure and projects must be based on reliable financing and full respect for international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Furthermore, he referred to the IMEC (India-Middle East-Europe) economic corridor, where Cyprus can contribute with its maritime know-how, professional services and digital partnerships, supported by regional arrangements such as the “3+1” partnership (Cyprus, Greece, Israel and the USA).

The new investment strategy 2027–2030

Referring to the government's next steps, the Minister of the Interior officially presented the axes for economic development for the next period. As he announced, "our strategy for attracting investment and talent for the years 2027–2030 is guided by a clear vision of four pillars: Attract, Retain, Expand and Connect."

The plan aims to attract new investors, support and retain those already established on the island, and deepen their connection to the domestic economy. To achieve these goals, the government is investing in cybersecurity, digital skills training for small businesses, and enhancing transparency, with AmCham being a solid and reliable ally on this journey.
