'Searching for Europa – Varosha 2024 AD' at the Faneromeni '24 Art Festival

A Dance/Music/Video Art performance entitled 'Searching for Europa – Varosha 2024 AD' will take place at the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation in Nicosia on Thursday, 12 September as part of the Faneromeni '24 Art Festival.

As noted in a Foundation announcement on the event, "We come from different shores of the Mediterranean, from landscapes that chase each other like the waves of the sea, like a game of mirrors.

In our journeys, we oscillate between East and West, between conflicts and hopes, between horror and beauty. Like Europa’s four brothers who set out west to look for her, we also navigate the often tortured but always mysterious waters and coasts of the Mediterranean.

On the island of Cyprus, which was divided by war, there where Nicosia stands, the last divided European capital and where our research began, we also oscillate between south and north. We cross the buffer zone that divides the island in two parts, south and north, we cross the checkpoints, going up and down, again and again in an endless search for Europa. Oscillation seems to be the only possible movement in the Mediterranean Sea.

The music accompanies the audience in a constant oscillation between the stage ground and the abstract level of the video art the group created especially for the performance with shots of Varosha, this unique place full of meaning, where the reverberations of the war, 50 years later, are still powerful.

The dance seems to oscillate among the ruins of the ghost city, it seems to search for Europa and with her, the beauty that is still possible."
